AI visibility checker
The questions your customers would ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and the rest, written from your business, service and town. Ask each one, mark what came back, and the score is worked out as you go. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
The same check runs every month inside our SEO services, reported beside the client’s Search Console.
Score
Download CSVFill in the business name, service and town to get the questions. This needs scripting on.
The questions
Ask each question in a private window, signed out, from the town your customers are in. Then mark what the answer did.
How to run the check
- Fill in the business name, the service in the words a customer uses, and the town. Add a problem customers bring you and up to three competitors if you know them.
- Open a private window and sign out, so a saved history or memory does not tilt the answer.
- For each question, press Open for the assistants that take a question in the address, or Copy and paste it into the others.
- Read the answer and its sources, then mark the result for that assistant. The score updates as you mark.
- Download the CSV. Next month, run the same questions from the same place and compare.
What each result tells you to fix
- Not named. Start with eligibility. ChatGPT search needs OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and let through by the host; Google AI Mode needs the page indexed and eligible for a snippet. Both are set out with their sources in the ChatGPT SEO guide and the Google AI Mode guide.
- Competitor named, not you. Open the source the assistant cited for them. It is usually a page that answers that exact question in its first paragraph and names the town. Write the page you are missing.
- Named, no link. The assistant knows the business but did not cite your site. That usually means the answer came from a directory, a review site or the Business Profile, so those need to be right as well as the website.
- Named with wrong facts. Fix this first. Find where the wrong hours, address or service came from, usually an old listing, and correct it there. The citation sites list shows where to look.
Running it as an AI visibility audit
A one-off check tells you where you stand today. An audit adds the reasons. Alongside the grid, check that robots.txt lets the answering crawlers in (the robots.txt generator names each one), that the pages the questions should land on exist and are indexed, that the Business Profile matches the website, and, if you publish one, that your llms.txt follows the format (the llms.txt validator reads it). Then repeat the same questions monthly, so a change in the score can be tied to the work done in between.
One honest limit. Two people asking the same question can get different answers, because OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses a general location from the IP address and, where saved, the person’s memories. So the score is a reading from one place on one day. Taken monthly from the same place it is a trend you can act on; taken once it is a snapshot.
If you would rather we ran it
We run these questions every month for clients, fix what the answers show, and report the result beside the Search Console numbers. It is part of the SEO service, and the first run is part of an SEO audit.
Questions about checking AI visibility
Why does it not check the assistants automatically?
Because the answer depends on who asks and from where. OpenAI’s help article says ChatGPT search takes a general location from the IP address and can use saved memories when it rewrites a question, so a server asking from a data centre gets a different answer from a customer asking in your town. The tool writes the questions and keeps the record, and you ask from where your customers are.
Which result counts as visible?
Named and linked, named without a link, and named with wrong facts all count as named, because the assistant knew the business. Named and linked is the best of the three, and named with wrong facts is the one to fix first, because a wrong phone number or a closed location sends customers away.
How often should I run it?
Once a month, with the same questions, from the same place, ideally signed out or in a private window so a saved history does not tilt the answer. The record stays in this browser, and the CSV download keeps a copy you can compare against next month.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The page makes no network request. The open buttons pass the question to the assistant in a new tab, which is the same as pasting it yourself. The grid is saved only in this browser.
What do I do when a competitor is named and I am not?
Open the answer’s sources and look at the page the assistant cited for the competitor. It usually answers the exact question in its first paragraph, names the place, and is indexed and reachable by the assistant’s crawler. The ChatGPT SEO and Google AI Mode guides list the checks, each from the vendor’s own documentation.
