CTR calculator

Clicks divided by impressions is easy. Whether the answer is any good depends on where the page sits, so this takes the average position from the same Search Console row, compares your rate with what that position usually earns, and says how many more visits a better title would bring from the impressions you already have. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

One row from Search Console

One page or one query, not the whole site.

From the same row. Leave empty and the page only gives the rate.

Reading a rate against its position

Clicks divided by impressions is the rate. On its own it says little, because the same rate is excellent at position twelve and a problem at position three. The typical bands used here are starting points, the same ones the ROI calculator uses: the top result takes somewhere around a quarter to a third of clicks on most searches, positions two and three together take a similar share, four to six a few percent each, and seven to ten a few percent between them. Your own Search Console shows the real figure for any search you already appear for, and it is the figure to trust over any band.

When the rate sits well under the band for its position, the result is being seen and not chosen. The title is usually the reason: it repeats the keyword and says nothing a person would click for, or it is cut off where the useful words were, or Google has rewritten the description into something flat. Sometimes the cause is the page around you: a map pack, four adverts and an AI answer above position one leave the organic results with far fewer clicks to share, and no title fixes that.

The last figure is the reason to care. The impressions are already yours; a title that lifts the rate to the band brings that many more visits from them, and at the same conversion rate those are more enquiries, without the page moving a single position.

Fixing the title

The SERP preview shows exactly where Google cuts a title and a description, in pixels rather than characters. Once the click is won, the conversion rate calculator covers the next step, and the on-page checklist has the rest of what a page needs.

Questions about click-through rates

Where do I get clicks, impressions and position?

Search Console, free, under Performance. Open a page or a query, set the date range to the last three months and the row shows all three. Use one page or one query at a time; the site-wide average mixes a hundred different positions into one meaningless rate.

What is a good click-through rate?

It depends on the position more than anything else. The top result on most searches takes somewhere around a quarter to a third of clicks, positions two and three together take a similar share, and it falls away fast below that. A rate is good or bad only next to the position that earned it, which is why this page asks for both.

My position is good and the rate is low. Why?

The title and the description are not winning the click, or the result page has features above you. A title that repeats the keyword and nothing else, a description Google rewrote, or a map pack, a set of adverts and an AI answer sitting above position one all pull the rate down. The first two are yours to fix; the SERP preview tool shows exactly how Google cuts the title.

Does a higher click-through rate improve rankings?

Nobody outside Google can say for certain, and the honest answer is that it does not need to. A better title on the same position brings more visits from the same impressions, and more visits at the same conversion rate are more enquiries. That is the return, whatever it does to the ranking.

Is anything I type here sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. There is no form submission, no analytics event and no network request of any kind, which you can confirm in your browser’s network tab.
