Google AI Mode SEO

How Google’s AI Mode chooses the pages it links, what it now does for a local business without asking the owner, and the eight checks to run first. Taken from Google’s own documentation, help pages and blog, and from nothing else.

For a local business most of this is the profile and the pages our local SEO services already cover.

8 checks

Each one traced to the Google page it comes from. Checked against those pages on 5 October 2026.

AI Mode is the tab in Google Search that answers in conversation, with links to its sources. Google’s help page calls it its most powerful AI search experience: you can ask anything and get an AI-powered response, supported by web content. For a business the question is simple. When somebody asks AI Mode something your business answers, does the answer name you and link to you?

Google has published more about this than most people expect. Its Search Central page on AI features and your website (updated December 2025) gives the eligibility rule. Its help page on AI Mode explains how a question is searched. A second help page, on checking local availability and pricing, and the Business Profile page on automated calls on behalf of customers describe what it does for local businesses. Where those pages are silent, this one is too.

1What AI Mode is, and how it differs from AI Overviews

AI Overviews are the summaries that appear above the ordinary results on some searches. AI Mode is a separate experience a person chooses to open. Google says it is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed, which is how people shop for a service: which one, how soon, how far, who does this kind of job.

Google also says the two may use different models and techniques, so the answers and the links they show will vary. Being linked in an AI Overview for a search tells you nothing certain about AI Mode for the same search. They have to be checked separately.

2How it chooses pages: query fan-out

Google’s help page says AI Mode uses a query fan-out technique, dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one at the same time. Search Central describes the same thing as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. The page that gets linked is the one that answers one of those sub-searches well.

One question divided into sub-searches, each answered by its own page On the left, one question: an electrician in Austin who can fit an EV charger this week and works weekends. Arrows lead to four sub-searches on the right: EV charger installation Austin; electrician weekend appointments Austin; EV charger permit Austin; electrician reviews Austin. Under the sub-searches a note: each is answered by the page, or the profile, that answers it best. ONE QUESTION, SEVERAL SEARCHES (OUR ILLUSTRATION) The question electrician in Austin who can fit an EV charger this week and works weekends EV charger installation Austin electrician weekend appointments Austin EV charger permit Austin electrician reviews Austin each answered by the page, or the profile, that answers it best
Our illustration of the technique Google describes. Google does not publish the sub-searches it runs for any question; these are the ones a person would expect.

Read the figure from the business side. An electrician with one page called Services and a list of twenty jobs has no page that answers the first sub-search well. An electrician with a page about EV charger installation in Austin, which says in its first paragraph who fits them, how soon and on which days, answers two. The weekend hours come from the Business Profile. The reviews come from wherever people leave them.

The eligibility rule is one sentence. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There is no file to submit and no markup to add. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, which is also what our llms.txt page concludes.

3What AI Mode does for a local business, with or without you

This is the part most owners have not heard about. Google Search Help says a person can use AI Mode to research service costs, find open appointment slots or check whether an item is in stock nearby, and that it can call businesses when the information is not online. The examples it gives are local appointments such as haircuts and auto repair, and home services such as electricians, tree cutting and exterior cleaning. The feature is available in English to signed-in users over 18.

From the business side, Google Business Profile Help says that when customers use Search or Maps to make a request, Google might contact the business through an automated phone call to complete it. If the business shares the details, the customer receives the quote or the product details by email or text. In the United States the help page says this is available in every state except Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska, with limited availability elsewhere.

Two things follow. First, the information you publish decides whether Google needs to call at all: hours, the services you offer and whether you take weekend work, written on the website and in the profile. Second, the calls are a setting. In the Business Profile, under Advanced settings, the section headed Google automated calls and text messages has three switches: bookings and inquiries from customers, keeping the profile up to date, and posting to the profile on your behalf. Leave them on or turn them off, but decide, and tell whoever answers the phone.

Bookings work through partners. Google’s August 2025 announcement said AI Mode would search across reservation platforms and websites for real-time availability, starting with restaurant reservations and expanding to local service appointments, and would link the person straight to the booking page. The partners it named include OpenTable, Resy, Tock and Booksy. A restaurant or salon that books through none of them can still be linked from its website, but not booked from the answer.

The profile work itself, categories, services, hours and reviews, is the same work that decides the Google map pack, and the Business Profile audit walks through it field by field.

4The eight checks, in the order they cost least

Each with the Google page it comes from. The first two take minutes, and a page that fails either cannot be linked whatever else it does.

  1. 1

The page is indexed and can be shown with a snippet

Google’s whole eligibility rule for a supporting link in AI Mode. A nosnippet tag, or a max-snippet of zero, takes the page out as surely as a noindex does. Check it in Search Console’s URL inspection.

  2. 2

Googlebot gets through robots.txt, the host and the CDN

Crawling allowed by robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure is the first item on Google’s list of practices for AI features.

    Google, AI features

  3. 3

There is a page for each question the fan-out will ask

One page per service, and per place you genuinely serve, so a sub-search for one service in one town finds a page about exactly that. A single page listing everything answers none of the sub-searches well.

    Google Search Help, AI Mode

  4. 4

Each page answers in its first paragraph, in text

Important content available as text is on Google’s list. An answer inside an image, a PDF or a slider is an answer the page does not give.

    Google, AI features

  5. 5

    The Business Profile is current

Hours, holiday hours, services and categories. Keeping Business Profile information up to date is the one local item Google names for AI features.

    Google, AI features

  6. 6

Somebody has decided the automated call settings

In the profile, under Advanced settings. Whoever answers the phone should know what a call from Google on a customer’s behalf is before the first one arrives.

    Google Business Profile Help

  7. 7

Bookings go through a partner Google works with, if you take bookings

Google names OpenTable, Resy, Tock and Booksy among the partners AI Mode books through. A booking system it cannot reach still leaves the website linked, but not the table or the slot.

  8. 8

The structured data says what the page says

Google asks that structured data match the visible text. It adds that there is no special markup for AI Mode, so nothing more is needed than that.

5How to tell whether AI Mode names you

Search Console will not tell you directly. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report under the Web search type, together with everything else, so a click from AI Mode looks like any other click. The only way to see whether you are named is to ask the questions your customers ask and write down what comes back.

Our AI visibility checker builds that list of questions from your business, service and town, and records the answers from AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest side by side, so the same check can be run again next month and compared. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.

6What this page does not claim

It names no ranking factor for AI Mode, because Google names none beyond the eligibility rule and the practices it publishes for all of Search. It quotes no study of how often AI Mode shows local businesses, because a study is somebody else’s sample. And it cannot say the checks above will get you named, because Google says meeting every requirement does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. What they do is remove every reason Google documents for a page or a profile to be left out.

For the ChatGPT side of the same question, OpenAI’s crawlers and what each one decides, see the ChatGPT SEO guide.

If you would rather we did it

The profile, the call settings, a page for each service and each place you serve, and the same questions asked of AI Mode every month and reported beside your Search Console numbers. That is the local SEO service.

Questions about Google AI Mode

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so the answers and the links they show will vary. AI Overviews appear above ordinary results on some searches; AI Mode is a separate experience a person chooses, which Google describes as most helpful where exploration, reasoning or complex comparison is needed.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google’s page on AI features says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisation for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Not as its own report. Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic in the Performance report, under the Web search type. To see whether you are named at all, you have to ask the questions yourself, which is what our AI visibility checker records.

Why did an automated call from Google ask about my prices or availability?

Google Search Help says AI Mode can check service costs, open appointment slots and local stock for a person, and can call businesses when the information is not online. Its examples include haircuts, auto repair, electricians, tree cutting and exterior cleaning. Google Business Profile Help says that if you share the details, the customer receives them by email or text.

Can I stop the calls?

Yes. Google Business Profile Help says to open Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, and under Google automated calls and text messages turn off bookings and inquiries from customers, keeping the profile up to date, or posting to the profile on your behalf. You can also say on a call that you do not want more of them. Google may still call by hand to confirm business details.
