FAQ schema generator

Type the questions a page already answers and the answers it gives, and the FAQPage block appears on the right, ready to paste. Paste the page's own text too and each question is checked against it, because markup for a question the page does not show is the one mistake worth avoiding here. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

The questions and their answers

Only the ones this page shows. One block per page.

The page text, to check against

Optional. Select everything on the page, copy, paste here. Each question above is then looked for in it.

Nothing on this form is submitted anywhere. The code updates as you type.

The code

Add at least one question with its answer and the block appears here.

The code appears here as you type. This needs scripting on.

What was checked

What the markup does now, and what it stopped doing

For years an FAQPage block earned a set of dropdowns under the result, and every generator on the web still promises them. Google withdrew those dropdowns for almost every site in August 2023 and kept them for well-known authoritative government and health sites. So the reason to add this markup today is narrower and still real: it tells search engines, and the assistants that read structured data, exactly which questions the page answers and in what words. That is worth having, it costs nothing, and it is not a rich result.

The rule that has not changed is visibility. Every question and every answer in the block must be on the page for a visitor to read. That is why the tool asks for the page text: a question that is in the markup and not on the page is the exact case Google's guidelines name, and the one that draws a manual action. If a question is marked as not found, either add it to the page or take it out of the block.

Keep the answers plain. The generator escapes what you type so quotes and ampersands cannot break the JSON, and it leaves formatting out, because an answer that reads well as one paragraph on the page reads well in the markup too.

The other markup a small business page needs

A service business needs one block that says what it is and where it works before it needs one that lists questions; that is the LocalBusiness schema generator, built for businesses that travel to customers as well as shops. Whether structured data is present and valid is one line on the on-page checklist, and the audit checklist puts it in order with everything else.

    Questions about FAQ markup

Will this get me the FAQ dropdowns under my result?

Almost certainly not. In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known authoritative government and health sites, and that has not changed. The markup still describes the page accurately to search engines and to the assistants that read structured data, and it costs nothing to carry. Add it for that reason and not for the dropdowns.

Does the question have to appear on the page?

Yes, and so does the answer. Google’s rule is that FAQPage markup describes questions and answers a visitor can see. Markup for text that is not on the page is the case that draws a manual action, which is why this tool checks each question against the page text when you paste it.

Where do I put the code?

Inside a script tag of type application/ld+json, in the head or the body of the same page the questions are on. Most site builders and WordPress SEO plugins have a field for custom structured data; paste the whole block there, on that page only.

Can I put every question my business gets on one page?

Only the ones that page answers. A support page with fifteen visible questions can carry fifteen; a service page that shows three should carry three. One FAQPage block per page, and each block describing only what is on it.

Is anything I type here sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. There is no form submission, no analytics event and no network request of any kind, which you can confirm in your browser’s network tab.
