Small business web design

A website for a local business that does one job well. When someone in your town finds you on Google, it shows your services and your reviews and puts a call button under their thumb.

Plenty of local businesses run on a Google Business Profile alone. That works until a customer wants more detail than the profile shows, or a competitor with a site takes the searches the profile cannot reach. A small site on your own domain fixes both, and it does not need to be big to do it.

When a small site is the right build

Most of your work comes from Google Maps

A site linked from your profile gives Google more to rank you on, and gives the customer the detail the profile leaves out.

You have no website, or one you cannot edit

A one-page site goes live first and grows page by page as the business does.

Your customers call

Plumbers, cleaners, salons and repair shops win on the phone, so the site is built around the call button, your opening hours and the area you cover.

When it is not

A shop selling online, or a business with hundreds of products, needs a store. The Shopify and WordPress pages cover those.

What the site includes

  • Your services and your reviews

A section for each service in the words your customers search with, and your Google reviews on the page.

  • A call button on every screen

Tap to call on a phone, with your hours beside it, so nobody has to hunt for the number.

  • Your own domain and hosting

The site lives on a domain in your name, with hosting and SSL set up, so it stays yours if you ever move.

  • Your Google Business Profile and local SEO

The profile linked to the site, your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and the basic local SEO that gets you found in your town.

How the SEO and the build work together

The site is built by the team that does local SEO, so the search work is in it from the first day: a title and heading for each service with your town in it, LocalBusiness schema with your hours and area, the profile and the site saying the same thing, and pages light enough to open quickly on a phone signal.

For the work that keeps you ranking after launch, see local SEO services.

Built in from the start

  • A domain in your name, or the one you already own
  • Hosting and SSL set up
  • Your Google Business Profile linked to the site and checked
  • LocalBusiness schema with your hours and service area
  • A call button and a contact form that reach you

On top of the speed, accessibility, SEO, hosting handover and training that come with every build.

Local business sites we have built

Sites for local service businesses, each built around the call and the area it covers. They are now static Astro sites.

Pages live is the count in each site’s own sitemap. Mobile speed and accessibility are PageSpeed Insights scores out of 100 for the home page, on a phone. All read 14 Oct 2026. Screenshots taken the same day.

How a build runs, from brief to launch

Six stages on every site, whichever platform it is built on. The scope and the quote are agreed in writing after the first call, before any design starts.

  1. 01

    The brief, on a call

What the site has to do, who it is for and what exists today. If there is a site already, we read its Search Console first, because the pages earning impressions decide what the new one must keep.

  2. 02

A page map before any design

Every page listed with the search it answers and the action it asks for. On a redesign, every old URL is written beside its new home. You sign the map off before design starts.

  3. 03

    Design on real content

Pages designed with your actual words and pictures, at phone width first. You review in the browser, on a staging address search engines are told to ignore.

  4. 04

Build, with the SEO written in

Titles, descriptions, headings, schema and internal links are written as each page is built, so nothing is added at the end by somebody who never saw the page map.

  5. 05

    Checks before launch

Speed measured on a phone, every page at 320px wide and at 200 percent text, keyboard and screen reader checks, forms sent and received, redirects tested against the new build.

  6. 06

    Launch, handover and training

The switch, then Search Console read daily for two weeks. The domain, hosting and logins stay in your name, with a written note of how the site is built and a recorded session on editing it.

What every build includes

  • Speed

Measured in PageSpeed Insights on a phone before launch. Images sized for the slots they fill, fonts that do not block the page, no script a page does not use.

  • Accessibility

Colour contrast, keyboard use, visible focus, alt text written for each picture, 44px tap targets on phones, and every page readable at 200 percent text.

  • SEO foundations

One title, description and H1 per page, schema, a sitemap that matches the site, clean URLs, redirects from every old address, and Search Console set up in your name.

  • Hosting handover

The domain, the hosting and every login in your name. We set the site up on your host, recommend one, or host it for you; either way you can move it.

  • Training

A recorded call showing whoever edits the site how to change a page, add a post and swap a picture, and a short written guide to keep beside it.

  • Two weeks after launch

Search Console, forms and errors checked daily for the first fortnight, and anything the launch broke fixed straight away.

Questions about small business websites

How much does a small business website cost?

It depends on how many pages you need and whether you already own a domain. We quote it in writing after a short call, and there are no packages to pick from.

Can I see it before I pay anything?

Yes. We can build a one-page preview from your Google Business Profile, with your services, your reviews and a call button, so you can see how it would look before deciding.

Will people in my town find it?

The site is set up for it, with your town in the titles, the schema in place and the profile linked. Where you land also depends on your reviews and on the competition in your town, so we tell you what to expect for your searches on the call instead of promising a position.

Who owns the site?

You do. The domain is registered in your name, and if you ever move, the site and its files go with you.

Can it grow later?

Yes. A site can start as one page and add a page per service or per town as the business grows, on the same build.
