How to remove hacked spam pages from Google

The malware is gone and the spam is still in the results. Here is how we handle the search damage after a site is cleaned.

By Hamza Rivera, updated

Short answer: Hacked spam pages need the underlying site problem resolved first. Passieon checks the affected URLs and Search Console, handles the relevant requests, and reports what Google shows. Google decides when pages leave its index.

What we handle

  1. 1

Check the source of the spam

We confirm the site has been cleaned and collect the affected URLs from search results and Search Console.

  2. 2

    Check each URL

We verify that spam pages no longer show the injected content and that the server returns the appropriate response.

  3. 3

    Handle Search Console

We review the sitemap, security report and available removal tools, then submit the relevant requests. Google controls what appears in its index.

  4. 4

    Monitor the result

We compare the affected URLs and reports after the work, and tell the owner what changed and what remains.

Questions about removing spam pages from Google

Is the Removals tool enough on its own?

No. Google says the tool is temporary, about six months, and that you must also return a 404 or 410 status or add noindex for the removal to last.

Should I use 404 or 410?

Google treats all 4xx errors except 429 the same, and removes a previously indexed address from the index for either. Use whichever your server makes easy. A 410 states clearly that the page is gone on purpose, but Google does not say it is faster.

Should I block the spam pages in robots.txt?

No. Google says not to use robots.txt to keep a page out of results. A page Google cannot fetch is a page Google cannot see is gone.

Should I redirect the spam pages to my home page?

We would not. A redirect tells Google the content moved and still works, which is not true. A not found status says what happened.

When will the pages leave Google?

Google controls recrawling and removal. We check the affected URLs and report what is visible in Search Console and search results.

Can you do this for me?

Yes. Passieon is an independent agency, not connected to Google. Send your site through the form and we will reply in writing with what Google shows for it.

Can you guarantee the pages will go?

No. Google decides what stays in its index. We clean the site, return the right status and file the right requests.
