List the URLs you actually want found
Include the chosen canonical address for each useful page. Leave out redirects, 404 pages, noindex pages, private areas and duplicate parameter versions. If a sitemap says a URL should be indexed while the page says noindex, the mixed signals create work without helping the reader.
Use dates only when a page really changed
The optional lastmod value should reflect a meaningful update to the page, such as changed main content or structured data. Rewriting every date on every build gives Google no useful change signal. A page with no reliable modification date can omit the value.
Submit and inspect the file
Find the sitemap address, open it in a browser, and confirm that a few important URLs are present and load correctly. Submit the address in Search Console Sitemaps. Review processing errors and inspect a specific important URL when indexing remains unclear.
Keep links doing their job
The sitemap is one discovery path. Link to important service and guide pages from relevant pages on the site so visitors and crawlers can reach them naturally. After a site move, update the sitemap to the new URLs and test the redirect map separately.
