Local SEO in South Africa

South African buyers search by suburb, not by city. Metro areas are large and fragmented, so a single page covering Johannesburg competes with pages written specifically about Sandton, Randburg and Midrand, and loses to all of them.

Connection speed and data cost shape what works here in a way they do not elsewhere. A page heavy with sliders and video is a page a lot of buyers will not wait for, and cutting page weight is one of the few pieces of SEO work that shows up in enquiries almost immediately.

How the work is done

The profile is the product

Categories decide which searches you are eligible for at all, and most profiles have one when they could have five. Services, attributes, opening hours and the question-and-answer section are all ranking inputs and all sit empty on most profiles. This is the first thing we work through and it is the part that moves fastest.

A page for each place you actually serve

One page listing twelve towns in a footer ranks for none of them. A page per area you genuinely send somebody to, written about that area, ranks for each. The test is whether you would take the job: pages for places you cannot serve cost more than they earn and they read as false to a buyer.

Citations, which are boring and still matter

Your name, address and phone number have to match everywhere they appear. They usually do not, because a business moves, changes a number, or gets listed by somebody else with the old details. Cleaning that up is unglamorous and it is one of the few things that reliably moves a stubborn map ranking.

Reviews, asked for properly

Volume, recency and whether you reply all feed the ranking, and all three are within your control. We set up the asking so it happens without anybody remembering, and the replies get written.

What is different about search in South Africa

Suburb, not city

Buyers search by suburb. One city page does not cover them, and the businesses that rank are the ones that wrote a page for each area they genuinely serve rather than listing thirty in a footer.

Page weight is a conversion problem

Mobile data is expensive and connections vary. Cutting page weight is one of the few pieces of SEO work that shows up in enquiries almost immediately.

The profile does the local work

Categories, services, hours and photographs on a Google Business Profile decide the map pack, and most competitors set theirs up once and never touched it again.

Searches in South Africa run on google.co.za, which returns a different result set to google.com. Work is checked against the one your customers actually use.

How the engagement works

There is no package to pick from. What the site needs is decided on a call and written down before any work starts, because a business with one location and a clean site needs a different month to an agency reselling to twelve clients.

  1. 01

A call, before anything is quoted

Thirty minutes on what you sell, where you sell it, and what the site looks like today. No scope is written before that conversation, because the right work depends on all three.

  2. 02

    A written scope and quote

What will be done, in what order, and what it costs, in writing. Nothing starts until you have agreed to it.

  3. 03

    Month to month from there

The work runs monthly and the scope changes as the site does. Cancel with 30 days’ notice.

True of every engagement

  • Search Console and Analytics set up in your name, so the data is yours
  • No lock-in: month to month, cancel with 30 days’ notice
  • One person you can email, in your working hours
  • Every change listed in the monthly report

Questions about local seo in South Africa

How fast does local SEO work?

Profile work often shows within four to eight weeks because so few competitors maintain theirs. Area pages take three to six months. Citation clean-up shows up slowly and mostly by removing a ceiling rather than by lifting you.

Do I need a page for every town near me?

No, and it is the commonest way this goes wrong. A page for a place you would not actually travel to is a page that earns nothing and makes the rest of the site look padded. Pages follow where you genuinely send someone.

Can you fix a profile that is suspended?

Usually, and the first step is finding out why, which is often a category or an address problem rather than anything you did. It is handled case by case and we will tell you honestly if it looks unlikely.

We have several locations. Is that different?

Yes. Each location needs its own profile and its own page, and the failure mode is one page and one profile trying to cover all of them.

Do you publish South African client results?

Only results that can be verified from a client’s own Search Console report are published anywhere on this site, and the ones shown come from other markets. Nothing is estimated or illustrative.

Do you work in rand?

Quoting is handled on the call. No prices are published on this site because the right scope depends on the market and on how much the site needs fixing first.

Which comes first, the site or the profile?

Usually the profile, because it moves fastest and costs least. The site work runs alongside it.
